Here's an update from Inyo SAR FB page. Current conditions on Mount Whitney are still snowy. Yes, it is melting and getting a little less every day, but a lot of snow is remaining, especially in the dangerous sections around the 99 Switchbacks of the Main Trail as well as the Chute on the Mountaineers’ Route.Water quantity is a personal thing, period. All I can tell you have run out taking two liters and 4 liters. It depends on many factors heat, humidity, work load, etc. The rule of thumb is 16 to 24 oz. per hour activity...I regularly weigh 2 pounds less after a 30 to 40 minute run.The Whitney Portal Hostel and Hotel is located on the corner of Post St. and Main St. in the town of Lone Pine, CA. The building is walking distance to the local market and 15 minutes drive downhill from Whitney Portal and Whitney Portal Store. RB, even after the driest of winters, May 25 is an extremely early time to use the switchbacks.The best thing is to be off the mountain (at least off the summit and off the two-mile trail from Trail Crest) before the thunderstorms hit, which is usually after 2 PM.
